Our Story
We are a Sri Lankan owned travel company, run by people who grew up on the island's back roads. Every itinerary is designed in-house and delivered by our own licensed guides.
Why We Started
Island Aura Travels is a Sri Lankan owned travel company crafting private, slow-paced journeys across the island — from leopard country to the misty tea hills and the surf-washed south coast.
Island Aura Travels started because too many visitors were being sold ten stops in ten days — three hours in a vehicle for forty minutes at a site, then on to the next one. It ticks boxes, but it is not travelling. So we built the opposite: fewer places, longer stays, and a guide who knows why the place matters.
Today we run private and small-group journeys across every region of the island, from the Cultural Triangle to the Jaffna causeways. Everything is designed here in Colombo, driven by our own chauffeur guides, and supported by a phone number that a real person answers at 3am if you need it.
What We Stand For
Every chauffeur guide on our team is SLTDA licensed, speaks fluent English and has driven the route you're on many times before. They know which gate opens at 5:30 and which viewpoint clouds over by nine.
We cap driving days at around three hours and build in genuine rest days. If an itinerary looks too full to us, we will tell you and suggest what to cut — even if it means a shorter, cheaper trip.
No elephant riding, no captive-animal photo stops, no hatcheries keeping turtles in tanks. We use village homestays, family guest houses and local lunches so more of what you pay stays in the community.
Entrance fees, permits, train reservations and safari fees are in the quoted price, not collected as surprises on the road. We take no commission from gem shops, spice gardens or batik factories — so we never take you to one.
One WhatsApp number, staffed 24 hours while you're in the country. Flight delayed at 2am? Your driver already knows and will still be there.
Date changes more than 30 days out are free. If a monsoon arrives early, we reroute you to the coast that's dry rather than sending you into the rain.
How We Got Here
Founded in Colombo with a single vehicle and a promise to slow travellers down. The first year was almost entirely word of mouth from guest houses in Ella.
Brought a field naturalist onto the team and began running our own small-jeep safaris in Yala and Wilpattu rather than sub-contracting them.
The pandemic emptied the country. We used it to retrain every guide, build our village homestay network in the Knuckles, and drop the rushed circuits for good.
With the digital nomad visa came a new kind of traveller. We started building 21 and 30 day routes with fibre-checked bases along the south coast.
Sixty itineraries, every region of the island covered, and a review average of 4.9. Still designed in the same office in Colombo.

Before You Book
The questions we answer most often. Anything else, just ask.
Most nationalities need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) applied for online before travel. It is valid for 30 days with double entry and is usually approved within 48 hours. We send every booked traveller a step-by-step ETA guide with the official link.
There is no bad month — only the wrong coast for that month. December to March suits the south and west coasts and the hill country. May to September is the season for the east coast and the best time for leopards in Yala. Tell us your dates and we will route you to wherever is in season.
Both. Every itinerary on the site can be run as a private tour for just your party, or you can join a scheduled departure date and share the vehicle and guide with a small group. Departure dates and remaining seats are shown on each package page.
Outside your included breakfasts, expect USD 10 to 20 per person per day for local restaurants, or USD 30 to 50 for hotel dining. Tipping is not compulsory; USD 10 to 15 per day for your chauffeur guide is the usual gesture for good service.
Date changes made more than 30 days before departure are free of charge, subject to availability. Cancellations more than 45 days out are refunded in full less any non-refundable supplier deposits. Full terms are sent with your booking confirmation.
Yes, and it is one of the easier countries in the region to travel solo. Our guides are licensed and background checked, we share your driver's details before arrival, and there is a 24/7 support line for the whole trip.
Yes. Sri Lankan cooking is naturally strong on vegetarian and vegan food, and we brief every hotel and restaurant in advance. Tell us about allergies at booking and we will confirm arrangements in writing before you fly.
Every package includes airport pick-up and drop-off at Bandaranaike International (CMB) or Mattala (HRI). Your driver waits in arrivals with a name board, and flight delays are tracked so nobody is left waiting.
