Sri Lanka is small on a map and slow on the ground. The single biggest mistake first-time visitors make is planning a week as though the distances behave like the kilometres suggest. Ninety kilometres in the hill country is three and a half hours. Plan accordingly and a week is plenty.
The route that works
Land in Colombo, drive straight to Sigiriya, and give the Cultural Triangle two nights. Climb the rock at 6am on your second morning — by 9am the steps are a queue and the stone is hot enough to burn through thin soles.
From there, move south to Kandy for the Temple of the Tooth at evening puja, then up into tea country. Take the train from Nanu Oya to Ella rather than driving it; the road is the same view through glass and half the fun.
What to skip
On a seven-day trip, skip Adam's Peak, skip the east coast, and skip Anuradhapura unless you are genuinely interested in archaeology. Doing all three means you spend your week in a vehicle.
Where to slow down
Give Ella two full days. It is the one place on this route where travellers consistently wish they had stayed longer — the walks are short, the food is good, and the Nine Arch Bridge is worth visiting twice.
